Initiate A Group Chat
[TOC]

I.Types of group chat

Internal groups and external groups are supported in WeCom. You can create a group chat by tapping “+” in the upper-right corner of the “Messages” page.
If you only select members in company Contacts for a group chat, this is an internal group; if you select members in company Contacts and external contacts/customers/WeChat contacts for a group chat, this is an external group.

II. Initiate a group chat

Operation:
Tap “+” on the “Messages” page to add multiple members to a new group chat.

III. Join a group chat

1.You can join a group chat by scanning the QR code provided by a group member. You can also be invited to a group chat when a group member taps “+” in the chat.

2.Get group QR code: Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner of a group chat on your mobile or click the three dots in the upper-right corner of a group chat on your PC. If an external group chat contains WeChat users, after the group reaches 200 members, scanning a QR code to join the group is not supported, and the group QR code can no longer be obtained.

3.If WeCom contacts are selected for a new WeChat group chat, they can join connected groups in these ways.

IV. Maximum number of group chats

1. Internal group: Unlimited.
2. External group: Verified/certified companies enjoy unlimited number of group chats.
For not verified/unauthenticated enterprises, when creating external groups, the number of external contacts added to the group cannot exceed 100 (i.e., at the moment of group creation, no more than 100 external contacts can be selected simultaneously); the total number of members across all external groups is capped at 100; even if the total number of external contacts has not reached 100, only 20 external groups can be created.
Note:
1.If the number of external contacts reaches the limit, only external contacts that have been served (not new external contacts) can be selected for a new external group.
2.Teams can create an unlimited number of external groups.

V. Maximum number of group members

2,000 for internal groups. There is no limit on the number of groups.
10,000 for all-member groups.
500 for external groups created by WeCom users.
200 for external groups created by WeChat users.

Note:
1.If the number of external contacts reaches the limit, only external contacts that have been served (not new external contacts) can be invited to an external group.

2.For unverified companies, the member limit for internal groups such as all-member groups, department groups, and interconnected groups is 500.
For existing internal groups, if the member count has exceeded this limit, no new members can be invited to the group; if the member count is under 500, new members can continue to be added until the limit is reached.
If an admin attempts to create a group with a member limit exceeding 500, but the company is unverified, that member limit setting will not be applied.

For more information about verification, please refer to the WeCom Verification Overview.
Please note that a service fee is charged for company verification. Please read carefully the relevant terms on the payment page before proceeding with the payment.

VI. Validity period of group chat QR code

7 days.

VII. FAQs

1. Why is real-name authentication required for members in external group chats?
Real-name authentication and company verification are not required for internal communication, but for external group chats. With the increasing use of WeCom for external communication, enhanced security measures have been implemented to prevent corporate fraud and impersonation. Company verification and real-name authentication are required for external communication.

2. When trying to remove members from an external group, I receive the message “Removal failed.”
Please ensure that the number of members being removed in a single attempt does not exceed 40. It is recommended to reduce the number of members being removed to 40 or below and then try again.

3. When trying to modify the group alias, I receive the message “Operation failed. Try again later.”
Please log out of WeCom on mobile device (“Settings” -> “Log Out”), then log in again using WeChat authorization. After that, try modifying the group alias again to see if the issue is resolved.
If you need to perform the operation on the desktop version, try logging out and logging back in on the mobile device after reauthorizing, and then perform the operation on the desktop.

4. I have transferred the ownership of a group to a WeCom user on the WeChat side, but on the WeCom side, the WeChat user is still shown as the group owner.
Please perform any action in the affected group on the WeCom side, such as sending a message or viewing a group member’s information, to see if the issue is resolved.

5. The message “No permission to create a group with more than xx members. Group member limit reached” appears when a group chat is created or when members are invited.
Please go to the “Admin Console” -> “My Company” -> “Chat Management” to check if a member limit has been set for the group owner under “Members create group chats”.
